Sheldon Calvary Camp is an Episcopal summer camp for children, youth, and adults, and welcomes campers and staff of all denominations and faiths.

It is a ministry dedicated to the lives of campers who come each year for recreation and spiritual growth in an environment filled with the love of Jesus Christ.

It is a place where children both discover and renew their spiritual lives in Christian community and carry that sense of grace away with them.

It is a place where children come to understand and care for one another in their diversity.

It is a place alive with a contagious spirit of joy and love.

About Sheldon Calvary Camp

Calvary Camp’s core program is a traditional overnight summer camp for kids looking to have fun every day in an environment that teaches community-building and models acceptance of differences.  Campers live in cabins of 8 or 9 children with two counselors, and participate in activities that may include swimming, arts and crafts, tennis, athletics, kayaking, environmental education, archery, team building, and photography.

Approximately 200 campers, aged 8-16, may attend Calvary Camp during a coed session.  Most children come for one week; some come for two or more.  In the final two weeks of the summer, we have two Family Camp sessions for families to enjoy together.

Seasonal staff members, ages 17 and older, serve in the capacity of camp counselors, activity leaders, coordinators, and directors. The overwhelming majority of staff members are former Calvary Campers, who hold a deep appreciation and respect for the camp’s mission. The staff is led by a team of Directors who are professional adults and collectively have a long history with Calvary Camp as campers, parents of campers, summer staff and full-time staff.

Mission & Values

Creating community is the core of our life at Sheldon Calvary Camp. Since 1936 Calvary Camp has provided a place of refuge, connection, and rejuvenation for generations of families. Campers from all different walks of life come together on the Lake Erie shore. In the simplicity of living, eating, playing, singing and growing together, they discover their common humanity and gain insight into their uniqueness. We believe that our differences make us stronger.

  • Sheldon Calvary Camp offers children, young adults, and families an environment of spiritual growth.  We encourage reflection and foster deep relationships.  We seek to live into Christian community by modeling the acceptance of individual differences, by valuing all of God’s creation, and by helping campers integrate faith into everyday life.

  • At Sheldon Calvary Camp we are committed to ensuring the physical and emotional safety of everyone who joins us. This includes protecting children from sexual misconduct and abuse. If you’d like to know more about the steps we take to ensure a safe environment for children, please contact us.

Our History

Harry E. Sheldon Calvary Camp was founded in 1936. May Sheldon — the widow of Harry E. Sheldon, founding partner of then Allegheny Steel — donated the land to establish Sheldon Calvary Camp in memory of her late husband.

Much has changed at Calvary Camp since. What began as a camp for choir boys from Calvary Church in Pittsburgh became full and separate overnight camps for boys and girls, and then evolved into a unified, coeducational overnight camp. Adjacent land has been purchased, and buildings and swimming pools have been built and upgraded. Program offerings have been adapted, let go, or added. Names and faces — and camp fashions — have shifted with the generations. Yet, the essence of Calvary Camp remains the same.
