Overnight Camp

About overnight camp

Traditional overnight camp (sometimes referred to as Coed Camp) offers a full recreational program for children ages 8-16. Our program seeks to integrate campers and staff in activities intentionally designed to build community. Our community is comprised of up to 250 people at a time sharing spaces and experiences. Calvary Camp has 22 cabins, assigned by age, each housing 8 campers and 2 counselors.  Campers share meals with their cabinmates and counselors in the Dining Hall, and participate in a variety of self-selected and whole-camp activities throughout the day and session with various combinations of other campers, in settings all around our campus.

Electives
There are four times each day when campers participate in self-selected organized activities (electives): two in the morning and two in the afternoon. On Sunday, shortly after arrival, campers fill out a sign-up sheet and rank their choices for the week. We encourage campers to select their own electives, with the guidance of a counselor as needed.  Making their own decisions about how to spend their session fosters independence, and sets campers up for an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Schedules for the week are distributed at breakfast on Monday. With nearly 200 individuals to schedule, we cannot guarantee that all campers will get all four of their top choices, but we work together to understand their highest priorities. Elective options may include swimming, fine arts, tennis, athletics, paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, photography, environmental education, archery, experiential education, and more.

Leadership Development
Campers who are 15 years old can participate in our Leaders-in-Training (LIT) program. This program explores key elements of leadership development. LITs also design and carry out a servant leadership project during the session.

Calvary Camp offers a Junior Counselor (JC) program for 16-year-old campers. This program allows JCs to mentor younger campers and shadow counselors in their daily responsibilities. Each JC is paired up with a cabin and has a variety of opportunities to build a connection with that group, and to find their voice as a leader in the camp context in a variety of structured and unstructured ways.

Competition
All campers participate in daily games and friendly competition. At the beginning of the session, the entire camp is divided into four teams (Tigers, Dragons, Falcons and Panthers) by cabin. Teams compete for points during different activities throughout the session. Morning competition games are organized for small groups, with either two or four cabins competing. Evening competition includes the whole camp in a single game or activity. At the end of each game counselors and campers shake hands and cheer for the opposing team. Good sportsmanship, humility, and winning and losing with grace and perspective are modeled and emphasized throughout by the staff. At the end of the session, we celebrate with a playful skit to announce the final placing of the teams.

Campfire, Chapel, and Devotions
Each day ends with either Campfire or Chapel, alternating evenings, followed by a time of reflection in the cabin. Counselors prepare an age-appropriate topic or activity each night as a way to engage campers in reflection on their experience that day.  Christian faith and spirituality are integrated into all aspects of our life together.
